About the exhibition
Four artists who could not be more different, plus a wild card, in one room – the connection is the contrast, like the saying: it's not all black and white.
Most group shows look for a common thread; this one celebrates the lack of one. Wood and texture, very bright colour, surrealism and black and white photography hang side by side. Christopher Willmott, Hayley Henderson, David Caines and Tony Stewart each bring their own world, with Chapter1 founder Rachael Hemingway as the wild card.

The Artists
Christopher Willmott – a contemporary abstract artist based in the coastal town of Waikouaiti. His work explores balance, structure and texture. His Bushfire series draws on the aftermath of a bushfire that swept through his farm in New South Wales – charred blacks and greys set against heat and white. His black and white piece is the poster image for this exhibition.
Hayley Henderson – a contemporary abstract artist based in Ōtautahi Christchurch. Working in layered acrylics and oil pastel, she uses expressive marks and fluid forms to capture colour, texture and movement. Each painting draws on memory and emotion, inviting the viewer past the edge of the canvas into a world of their own.
David Caines – Urban Misfit Art. An English surrealist, very different again.
Tony Stewart – Christchurch photographer behind Photoshots, known for wedding, portrait and commercial work. A former secondary school teacher, he fell for photography while travelling through more than 65 countries. He has won 148 NZIPP awards since 2004 and in 2018 became an NZIPP Grand Master of Photography – the first in the Canterbury Westland region. For this show he brings his black and white photography.
